In a previous story we discussed the amount of speculative/defensive registrations in the .xxx TLD, based on the zone file.
Today we are running the same analysis on .co.

Unlike the .xxx experiment, the present study will use a reconstructed (reverse-engineered) .co zone file. It is not guaranteed to be complete, but we believe there isn't much data missing.
We were able to gather 1145058 unique .co domains (at the second and third levels).
The zone was sampled around 21st December 2011.

Discussion

Registration in the .co ccTLD is available directly at the second level (.co) or at the third level under denominations such as .com.co, .net.co, .nom.co etc. The third level domains have been in use before .co was released to the public, and are more popular in Colombia proper.
The second level registrations currently account for 91% of the total volume.

As of 21 December 2011 we counted 1145058 active domain names in the .co zone file.

The breakdown is as follows:

Analysis

A large number of .co domains point to Godaddy name servers. In the top 10 list alone, they represent 13.82% of the total volume. In the top 50 the percentage jumps to 30.34%. When taking the whole file into account the percentage soars to about 36%.

The parking name servers most present in the zone file are: Sedo Parking (2.72%), Godaddy CashParking (2.01%), Whypark (0.44%), Bodis (0.42%), Google (0.40%), Namedrive (0.31%), Afternic (0.25%), Internet Traffic (0.18%), Parked.com (0.15%).

It is assumed that many if not most of the .co domains using domaincontrol.com name servers are currently resolving to a standard Godaddy placeholder page and are undeveloped. A certain number of domains may also be using Godaddy-hosted DNS, and resolving to developed websites.

It would be necessary to resolve each domain name to IP addresse(s) in order to establish the proportion of domains 'not in use'.

Conclusion

What is the proportion of speculative or purely defensive registrations in .xxx ?
That is a legitimate question that deserves answers.
We obtained a copy of the .xxx zone file in order to find out.

Methodology: we parsed the .xxx zone file and counted the occurrences of every name server found in the zone.

Finally we produced a 'toplist' sorted in reverse numeric order.

Discussion

Most domain names are assigned two name servers, resulting in two entries in the zone file, per domain.
For example, the zone records for 060.xxx are as follows:

060.xxx.                86400   IN
NS      ns1.sedoparking.com
060.xxx.                86400   IN
NS      ns2.sedoparking.com

In the example above NS1.SEDOPARKING.COM & NS2.SEDOPARKING.COM belong to the same logical set of name servers so they should be treated as a single unit.

A few misconfigured domains are also present. For example, domain name 030.xxx uses the following NS: NS1.SEDOPARKING.COM, NS2.SEDOPARKING.COM and NS2.TRANSIP.EU. That leads to inconsistent resolution since DNS answers will vary depending on which name server is queried for the domain name.

As of today (21 December 2011) we counted 100543 'active' domain names in the .xxx zone file.

The zone file does not contain all registered domain names. The following domain names may be missing from the zone file:

• domains in redemption status
• domains in pending-delete status
• domains in on-hold status
• domains with no name servers
• domains reserved at registry level that are non resolving (ie premium domains like sex.xxx)

Only the domain names provisioned in the zone file will be resolving. Any domain not in the zone file is therefore inactive.

Analysis

Two specific name servers immediately stand out with 83451 domain names assigned to them: nsb2.icmregistry.net and nsb1.icmregistry.net.
These are the name servers for reserved (protected) domain names (example: Disney.xxx).
Domain names using these name servers resolve to a standard placeholder page provided by the registry.
These two name servers alone account for a staggering 83% of the whole zone file.

A look at the top 10 list shows that 83% of the total registrations are defensive (inactive). The runners-up are default registrar name servers like Godaddy or Enom. These account for roughly 6%. A few domains may be using DNS features offered by the registrar but most are probably undeveloped.
Then we have domains parked with Sedo or Godaddy (1.6%).

Conclusion

The .xxx TLD can be said to be much more defensive than speculative.

Looking at the figures it is no wonder trademark holders are less than enthusiastic about Icann plans to roll out more new TLDs in the near future.

The numbers also suggest that reception by end users or domain investors has not been overwhelming.

Interesting but I will say that just because the servers are listed as ICM servers doesn’t mean the domains are only defensive

For example some of the domain we acquired at the TRAFFIC auction like orgy.xxx have still not been allocated and have ICM servers.

Of course there were also 20,000 Sunrise apps many of which are the subject of auctions to be held in January and they might show up as having ICM servers
